Second, affection is saved for a ‘sure thing’; if kissing is started it’s considered as if there’s something between the two people and beyond three it’s considered like an exclusive thing – then you can present the person as your boyfriend/girlfriend.
Finding a balance between these two cultures tends to be a challenge; my recommendation when dating French people is to explain up front what the deal is with Americans.
